Message to Faculty Regarding the Start of SWC Negotiations

March 26, 2025

Dear Colleagues,

The University will soon begin collective bargaining for a successor contract with the Student Workers of Columbia-United Auto Workers, Local 2710 (SWC). We know this labor negotiation comes at a challenging time for our community, but we remain unwavering in our commitment to our mission and values. We are grateful to Dean and Executive Vice President, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Amy Hungerford; Chief Operating Officer, Cas Holloway; and Vice President of Human Resources, Daniel Driscoll, for their leadership in this process. They will be working closely with faculty leaders throughout to help guide the negotiations.

Columbia students are among the most talented and promising in the world, and we are dedicated to providing them with the academic infrastructure, faculty mentorship, and individual support they need to realize their full potential. We also recognize that student employees are essential to our vibrant academic community and carry out important responsibilities for the University beyond their own academic coursework and pursuits.

We are committed to keeping you informed on the progress of the negotiations and you will receive periodic updates. Information regarding this current negotiating period will also be available under a “Current Negotiations” tab on the Student Benefits website once negotiations begin.

Thank you for your continued dedication to our students and the greater Columbia community.

Sincerely,

Angela V. Olinto
