Bargaining Session 20

August 31, 2026

On Monday, August 31, the University and the Student Workers of Columbia union (SWC) met for a twentieth bargaining session, in person at the Interchurch Center, to continue negotiating the terms of the union’s successor contract.

During the session, the University presented revised articles on Benefits and Child Care. The Benefits proposal would increase the amount available in the student employee health support fund, beyond the increase the University implemented last year, among other things. The revision to the University’s Child Care proposal would increase the benefit available to PhD student employees for adoption assistance. SWC put forward a revised counterproposal on Non-Discrimination. The parties engaged in discussion of the various proposals before ending the session early.

The University proposed additional bargaining sessions on September 15 and 29 at Interchurch and is awaiting the union’s confirmation of those dates.

The University remains committed to reaching a fair, competitive, and sustainable agreement with SWC that benefits all of our student employees and the entire Columbia community.
